Characteristics of the breed:
• General aspects
The Angus is a producing breed, renown for its precocious reproduction, easy labor, motherhood skills and longevity. The samples/examples of this breed should have good muscular mass and produce good quality meat (veined, tender, juicy, tasty and so on). They should be voluminous, with good depth and in all good balance and harmony. Their shapes must be soft, with a round contour, a defined line and without excessive fat accumulation. The temperament should be active, but not aggressive, nimble, heavy where it is necessary and with strong articulations.
The skin must be slightly thin; elastic; covered with soft, short and thick hair, either black or red. The early change of coat/hair is a sign of good hormone function and therefore of high fertility
• Size
The ideal size is far from the extremes. The intermediate size gives them balance, good performance and easy grass completion and, in addition, allows them to be fattening efficient at corrals
• Muscular Mass
The musculature must be adequate and well developed; the muscular volume should not be excessive so as not to affect the females fertility, one of the main characteristics of the breed. When we speak about muscular mass it means that by looking at a mature animal as a hole, there should not be an excessive difference between muscles composing the quarter, the loin, etc. The loin must be very thick and long quarters, with muscles well descended towards the paw. In the females, the muscular mass of the “paletas” shouldn't be prominent and the quarters could be muscular but in the right measure, therefore not to excessive and as a result compromise its reproductive function..
• Heaviness
The rightfulness of its heavy parts “aplomos” is essential for its function ability. Our rural system demands great displacement. Taking into account that the breeding is placed in restricted areas of the forage offer, of low cattle receptivity or in big fields, the good displacement is a priority.
• Body Depth
The breed must have as a constitutional part of its being good body depth, given by the long and good rib arch, allowing them a bigger ruminating capacity. This capacity lets them incorporate an important amount of grass that will in the future use for its fattening or in the case or the mothers, optimize their reproductive efficiency and its milky (lechera) production.
• Expression
In the case of the males, the masculine expression is connected to the good size of its testicles, strong neck muscular mass and an early change of hair/coat. “peleche”. In the case of the females, the expression must be of great femininity, with a small head and a soft neck well inserted to the body.
• Head
In the females the head should be small and thin shaped; with average size ears, slightly sloped upwards and quite hairy. In the males the crown of the head should be strong as well as its jaws. If we measure it, as a guideline, the width should represent two thirds of its length, should be more round and wide than the females, and also have smaller ears. In both cases they have well-defined butt ends and Poll.
• Neck
The females should have a quite long, thin neck, which is softly inserted to the head and body. While the males the neck is wider and has a more prominent crown of the head
.
• Body
Good depth, with a big rib arch, long and with a wide loin
.
• Haunch
In the females the haunch has to be wide and have a good opened birth channel. In the male it should be solid and flat with respect to haunch bone. Both of them without parasites at the skins butt end.
• Thorax
Either for males or females some adiposity is acceptable. This little amount of fat is related with a better function ability
.
• Quarters and Rump
Wide, deep, and with a solid musculature –not excessive- (especially in the females), long and as descended as possible to the flanks level.
• Paws
The paws have to be solid, pure and with good angles. Also, in the males cases, they must be strong
.
• Foot
They should have an average size, strong bones, and good heaviness and spread –which shows a good slaughters aptitude .
• Paletas
They must have a tendency to be parallel and not full of angles (seen form above), which indicates a good loin width. The external musculature has to be solid, but not exaggerated; otherwise their renowned easy labor could be compromised
.
• Hands
The hands should have an average size, with good heaviness
.
• Skin
The thickness of the skin has to be thin, as well as it should have a soft and short hair
.
• Testicles
Well descended and without excess of scrotum fat. With respect to its measures, see the table “Guidelines levels of the scrotums circumference”.
• Udder
The udders have an intermediate size, not fully covered with hair, in due proportion and well installed; with well developed, symmetrical quarters and thin nipples of average size.
